A couple of years ago I was lucky enough to get to go to the Northern Cheyenne Reservation in Montana to attend a teaching conference. While I was there, I went to Crazy Head Springs for an ethnobotanical walk with Linwood Tallbull. I learned so much about so many different plants and their incredible stories. One of the plants that I was especially interested in was western yarrow for all of its healing properties. So, I asked Linwood if I could get some of his seeds from him. He didn’t give me any seeds, but told me that the yarrow would follow me back. A few days later I got home very late. It was nearly one in the morning. I decided to look in my vegetable garden in my back yard, and there it was. Linwood was right, the western yarrow had followed me home.
This is the impact of Linwood Tall Bull’s dream to bringing native plants from the Northern Cheyenne Reservation to over 100 families in Ohio. Listen (see above) to the stories about western yarrow and its importance to the tribe. Learn about ways that you can use this plant around your home. Share these stories with family and friends and bring the Northern Cheyenne culture into our community.
The Shultz Campus, in Akron, has exciting plans for 2024 & 2025. As well as learning about and sharing the plants shown above with our community, we want to create a Center Towers’ Community Garden, a Native Plants Garden and a Tranquil Garden designed by 3rd & 4th graders. We also want to have a year-round greenhouse to support our community.
