Teachers from Dali Experimental Primary grew Butter Crunch lettuce in a hydroponic garden during their visit to Akron, Ohio.

September 5: We started planting with great anticipation! When we first saw the seeds, they were densely packed, one by one, and with a skeptical mindset, could such small seeds grow into strong lettuce? The children carefully placed the seeds into the sponge, putting three seeds in each small hole, and finally completed it by even putting a little dinosaur figurine to “take care” of these seeds! The children were really worried.

September 10: The lettuce grew at an amazing speed. It only sprouted a little on the 8th, and after two days, it actually grew a few leaves! The children shouted out immediately when they saw the leaves! Let me take a quick look! They were amazed by the strong vitality of life.

September 14: The lettuce was all normal. There were two leaves that were noticeably weaker than the others, and the children also noticed this and explained it to him, saying it was normal; people are also some tall and some short! It was different, and I started to worry a little about the lettuce.

September 16: Under John’s guidance, we pruned the leaves! We removed the weak ones and left the strong ones! The purpose was to help the strong ones grow better! I’m a little sad here, thinking about our society, which is also a competitive society and cruel, where only the strong survive and the weak are devoured. I’m wondering why we don’t give them some space? Maybe they can grow up too! But I found that its roots can’t be pulled out and can’t help them move to another place! Okay, then I can only accept it! I’m also thinking about how to help weak children, or rather, how to create more space?

September 17: We kept the strong one, and its growth rate got faster! A student was curious about its roots, took it up, and found that it sprouted white roots!
